Mistress May and Master Carter

A Netflix Show Review: Bonding

In short, I LOVED IT!

Mistress May and Master Carter from Netflix's Bonding
Mistress May & Master Carter

Bonding is a “dark comedy” with just 7 episodes currently on Netflix. Brendan Scannell plays Pete aka Master Carter and is one of the main characters, and who we meet first. I fell in love with Pete within the first five seconds of the show! He is adorable and just has that quality about him that makes you love him immediately.

Zoe Levin plays Tiffany aka Mistress May, and she is Pete’s high school best friend who works as a Dominatrix by night and attends graduate school for psychology during the day! I have to say a was drawn to her character for multiple reasons but one of them being of course, because we have the graduate school thing in common.. except I went for Clinical Mental Health not Psychology. But I love Tiff’s/Mistress May’s confidence and passion for what she believes in as well.

The show begins with Pete going to visit Tiff for the first time while she’s at work because she has offered him a position as her assistant and he is in serious need of some cash!

FAIR WARNING! This show IS about a dominatrix so there ARE some pretty intense scenes. With that being said, there is no nudity.

I loved this show for so many reasons though! First, it was pretty shocking and scandalous, but in the best ways possible! If you can’t handle sex scenes, this show probably isn’t for you!

At one part in the series the two friends are talking to each other:

“You made my heart cum”

“I made your soul giz” (This had me dying!!)

But my favorite thing about the show is Mistress May. I LOVE this girl’s commanding confidence!! Plus she stands up to a “bully” and does what needs to so often be done. (No spoilers here!)

And lastly, but certainly not least, I loved how Mistress May/the show explored the topic of practicing healthy BDSM and the potential benefits of doing so. Tiff explains it as, a “full service fantasy provider” where her clients can get “liberation from shame.” This isn’t a topic that I know much about but now am curious and find myself doing more research about it.

I recently learned that the show’s creator, Rightor Doyle based the series on his own life. When he was 22, gay, and a recent college grad, he worked with a high school friend of his that was a dominatrix. You can read more about him and the show here.

Bonding

SO, if you are looking for a good laugh, a little shock, and a lot of good vibes, you should definitely check out Bonding on Netflix ASAP!!

Feature Friday: GLOW

An Original Netflix Series: GLOW

GLOW: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling

Have you watched this AMAZING show on Netflix, Glow?? If you have, then you know how truly freaking awesome this show is!! The series tells the story of how the women in wrestling came to be a part of the wrestling world during the 1980s. Some of the main characters include Alison Brie as Ruth Wilder (aka the “Russian Bad girl”), Betty Gilpin (Dr. Carrie Roman from Nurse Jackie) plays Ruth’s best friend (& the “American Hero”).

You learn from the first episode that Ruth is sleeping with a married man & by the second episode we find out that he’s married to Ruth’s best friend, Debbie. The following scenes and interactions between the two are a more realistic response to this situation, than I have ever seen in a TV show.

At one point during the show, Debbie makes a comment to Ruth, “Sometimes I really fucking hate you for making it where we can never be able to have a normal decent conversation again.” This quote hit me pretty hard, just because I’ve been in this situation where my best friend hooked up with my boyfriend (in high school), and it was extremely difficult for me to deal with, so I understood where Debbie was coming from but I also could see Ruth’s side of the situation and she was honestly upset about it, and took responsibility for what she did. However, just because Ruth handled it well, minus the whole affair in the first place, doesn’t mean that Debbie could forgive her and just move on.

Anyway the point I’m trying to make here is that the show focuses on the experiences of real women. So often the media portrays things that happen in life in a way that causes people to question themselves, and/or their decisions that they make. Even the way someone is talked about in the media can distort our thinking about ourselves!

Think back to when news came out that an NFL player abused his wife, and then video surfaced to further provide proof for the incident that took place. Do you remember how talk show hosts talked about the women involved??

They asked questions like, “if he did this before they were married, why did she marry him in the first place??” Unfortunately, abuse is not that simple. There is a lot more to it than what people outside of the relationship are seeing! Abuse is a cycle, that continues and grows worse over time. The person doing the abusing seems charming and as if he/she could never be capable of such behavior. Not to mention, threat after threat might be given if the person being abused doesn’t do what the abuser asks. My point is, don’t make assumptions about anyone’s relationship behind closed doors, because most likely, YOU HAVE ZERO IDEA OF WHAT IT IS REALLY LIKE.

Now let’s circle back to Glow! (My ADHD might have kicked in just a little)

The opening scene is one that has more importance than it may seem when first watching, but the scene opens with Ruth auditioning for a role in a movie. When she finishes reading her lines, the audition lady, corrects her and tells her she read for the wrong part, and tells her she needs to read it again doing the right part. This sounds like no big deal BUT, it is! This is an example of how women were seen and treated during this period of time in our culture.

Could you imagine being seen as good for nothing but secretarial work or something “nice to look at?” Just be glad that that is not something we have to worry about anymore!

Glow also shows many different shapes, sizes, and colors of women, as well as examples of healthy relationships and friendships between women. PLUS it takes place in the 80s!! You know what that means?!?!?! BIG HAIR, AND LOTS OF MAKE UP! AND The costumes are AWESOME!! This show is just all around a good one for you to add to the TOP of your list!

Let me know in the comments if you have already watched it! What did you think?? I’m looking forward to hearing your opinions!!

Help Me Develop My Next Product!

Hello my Lovely Lionesses!

I have been laying low on the blog lately because I have been working on some new products to provide you gals! But I need your help! I’m having writer’s block except for creating new products, not really writing! YOU know what I mean!! ..right?

Anyway, I was working on a new free 7 day series on Boundaries, then started rethinking my topic because I’m not sure if that’s what you all want to work on. So I decided to just come straight to the source and ask you! What would you like for my next FREEBIE Series to be? If you could have anything, no matter how much you think it would cost, what would you like to see “in my store?” (Clearly I don’t have a store, & most of what I provide can’t be bought in a store anyway, but it gives a good visual, don’t you think?) But for real, tell me!

I’m also heading in a slightly different direction than I’ve been going with my content, focus, etc as far as products/services that I offer go. My blog is always going to have multiple topics and types of content because… because that’s just how I LIKE IT!! 🙂

So here is a little bit to give you an idea of where I’m headed…

How to Relationship in the Real World

For the ladies who have been cheated on, mistreated, & wronged! For the ladies who are PASSED PISSED & ready to move on to healthier, happier places!

I’m liking PASSED PISSED as a title of something FA SHO!  It just has a good ring to it! 🙂

So let me hear from YOU!! What do YOU want??? Tell me in the comments here or you can shoot me an email at thesmartlioness@gmail.com or Message me on Facebook or Instagram!

What is Healthy Love?

Healthy Love, What is it?

Do you ever get confused about what is actually healthy in a romantic relationship? If so, you wouldn’t be alone, the media tends to blur the lines sometimes between what’s healthy and what’s obsessive, or just plain crazy!

For example, a guy who is OVERLY into you, like obsessed with you, that’s clearly not healthy. But also, a guy who wants to move really quickly, doesn’t want to share you with anyone, and tells you he loves you, within the first month of the two of you dating, may sound romantic or you may feel like he just is really super into you. But these are all signs of unhealthy love and what can lead to things much worse such as abuse.

I am thinking of doing a Free series on Healthy vs Unhealthy Love and I need your feedback!! Tell me in the comments if this is something you would be interested in hearing!! I would love to know what you would like to see more of here! 🙂

The Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto by Brene Brown

I have become addicted to Podcasts!! Oh my gosh! There are SO MANY different Podcasts topics and categories that you can find, its crazy! So while in my Podcast binge, I found Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations.

Ya’ll this Podcast is SO good!! She talks to different authors (mostly those of books in her book club) and talks about the book they wrote — just goes deeper into why they wrote certain parts of the book and to explain certain things further, etc.

I listened to several episodes of her Podcast but 3 episodes stood out to me the most! The episodes that stood out the most to me were:

  • Arianna Huffington: What Will Be Your Spiritual Wake Up Call?
  • Glennon Doyle: The Power of Embracing Your Messy Beautiful Life
  • Brene Brown Part 1: Daring Greatly
    •  Part 2: Living With a Whole Heart

My favorite however was definitely Brene Brown and her book, Daring Greatly. Mrs. Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work.  She is also an author and public speaker.  Her book is about vulnerability and asks the question, “Can we make our lives more meaningful through vulnerability?” It also addresses how to conquer shame and living with a whole heart. So needless to say, I ended up ordering Brene Brown’s book, Daring Greatly!

I wanted to read it right then though! And there was not an option to get a digital copy of the book, so I went in search for more info and found Mrs. Brown’s – Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto – and just loved it so much I had to share it with you all!! I’m not a parent but I hope to be one day and this is definitely something than can be a good resource to refer to!! I think ya’ll will love it to, regardless of if you are a parent or not! Let me know in the comments what you think!!

Girl, Don’t Quit

(You can also click on the graphic above to download for your iphone wallpaper)

Don’t Quit

“When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill
When the funds are low & the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit—
Rest if you must, but don’t quit.

Life is strange with its twists & turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don’t give up through the pace seems slow—
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a fair and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out—
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit, —
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.”

13 Reason Why, You Should Watch, “13 Reasons Why”

13 Reasons You Should Watch “13 Reasons Why” WITH Your Kids

#13  It is one of the best stories I’ve seen In a very long time.

#12 The show covers almost every topic/issue that teens and their parents should be talking about.

#11 It shows examples of healthy vs unhealthy friendships

#10 It shows examples of healthy vs unhealthy romantic relationships

#9 It reminds you why, parents need to have open and honest conversations with their children about every topic possible, whether they are comfortable or not.

#8 The show gives parents the opportunity to have open, honest discussions about multiple topics that are extremely important for parents to talk about with their kids. (If your kids don’t get their information about sex from you, they WILL get it elsewhere and 50% of them will get it from the internet. Weigh the pros and cons of that one!)

#7 This show does have a lack of resources available to the students, so it is important that you and your child are familiar with the appropriate resources for suicide in your area.

*The best way to prevent suicide  is by having an open honest channel for conversation and discussion between you and your children. Your children should feel safe sharing anything with you.

#6 There is also a lack of communication between anyone and everyone, really. But, I believe that this is what was part of the problem. We aren’t communicating with each other! So it would be important to discuss with kids, the importance of a support system of friends and family members that are safe for them to talk to.

#5 Have an open discussion about anxiety/depression & mental illness. Does mental illness run in your family? If yes, then discuss that! These are things you need to talk about!!

#4 Have an open and honest discussion about safe and healthy relationships. Talk about spotting red flags in a partner. And what they should look for in a healthy relationship.

#3 There is also the need to have a conversation about peer pressure and what to do when faced with it. Come up with a plan with your kids for situations that they might be put in and what to do when it happens. Come up with a code word for situations where they might not be able to say anything.

#2 It is also important for you to watch the show before your kids watch it, so you can be prepared for what happens and when.

#1 Its a great way to deepen and strengthen your relationship with your kids! Don’t let your fears about the situation take that opportunity away from you!

**There is a some graphic images and situations that take place and children should be age appropriate- whatever you deem appropriate (you know your child best)

**I will say that if your child has a history of suicide ideation or attempts, you might reconsider watching this show, depending on your child and what you think would be best depending on your situation.**

If you or someone you know is suffering from depression and might be at risk, the National Crisis Hotline   is available by clicking here.

Startling Teen Statistics on Birth Control Methods

I recently saw an article condoms.jpegthat reported some pretty alarming statistics that I thought I would share! Whether you are a parent or not, I think that this might be something that you would want to hear and if you don’t want to hear it you definitely NEED to hear it! And this is not at all to scare you, but to show you the facts and realities of teen sexuality in today’s world.

Teens are are going to have sex. This is just a reality that must be accepted. There are exceptions to this but exceptions are RARE.

A new study was published from the Center for Disease Control on teens and sex and it revealed that most teens are using birth control when engaging in sex, which is a great thing!  The study explained that 99.4% of sexually experienced teen girls used some form of contraception.

The scary part of this study was that the second most popular “method of contraception” was the “pull out method.” This method was second to the use of condoms, but 60% of adolescent girls reported having used this “method” of birth control.

We all know that this method is nearly impossible to use perfectly, especially for a someone just learning what sex is, what it feels like, and how to navigate their feelings And, according to the Guttmacher Institute, people that use this method have the highest rates of contraceptive failure, 20% ending in pregnancy within a year.

Some people defend this method to the death, but what it also doesn’t account for is STDs! The pull out method definitely doesn’t prevent anyone from getting an STD, so its incredibly important to teach teens to use condoms if & when they are going to be sexually active.

Sex is not always an easy subject to talk about with your kids but it MUST be done, because sometimes the alternative is a conversation where your child tells you they are pregnant, or got someone pregnant. If sex is a subject you have difficulty talking with your kids about, I’m giving some tips below. However, feel free to contact me for more tips! I would be glad to help you out!

  • Use age appropriate language
  • Answer questions about sex as soon as they start asking questions with age appropriate language
  • Teens report appreciating having knowledge about sex and about 50% say that if they don’t get that information from their parents or friends, they seek out info online (NOT WHERE YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO LEARN ABOUT THE BIRDS AND THE BEES!!)
  • Keep an ongoing conversation about sex with your kids– for example, See a magazine in the checkout line at Walmart that’s a little sexy and your kids start asking questions- answer them openly and honestly while expressing your morals and values
  • Never shame or make a child feel guilty for being curious!

Why “The Smart Lioness”?

lionesspic2What’s with the name?

What lead me to want to help and empower women was the fact that I was in an abusive relationship for four years. It took me time to even realize I was being abused believe it or not. He wasn’t hitting me, but his words were killing me one sentence at a time. It completely changed me and who I was. After I finally got out of the relationship I didn’t even know who I was anymore. How could I? He told me who I was. Now I had the ability to think for myself and, I didn’t know how to!

However, I had some amazingly supportive friends (the ones I hadn’t completely isolated myself from) that helped get me back to reality. And was in school at Auburn for Human Development and Family studies, and learned so much from my classes. But I also participated in therapy and starting dealing  with “my stuff.”  I learned about myself, figured out my values, and who I really was after I washed off all of that toxic layer of shit I had allowed myself to believe. And in doing so I was able to begin feeling like a real human again, and with time and work on myself with the help of multiple therapists and friends I turned my nightmare of a past into something I can use to help others. If I can help other women avoid getting into a relationship like I did, or if they were unable to avoid it and have been in a toxic relationship or are currently in a toxic relationship then I want to help them get out and get their identities back. Because it gets lost somewhere along the way.

That’s kind of where “The Smart Lioness” comes from, its kind of like my vision of the end result of the transformation from a woman who is lost and hurt into this beautiful, intelligent, and powerful lioness who is capable of anything. Its more of a symbol of hope or of that goal that you seek but never actually completely reach because its a personal development goal and hopefully personal development and growth never ends. To stay truly mentally healthy we should always be learning and growing.

So with that being said, I’m constantly working on “unleashing my inner lioness” and want to encourage other women to do the same. You may not believe that she’s in there, but she is, and with time and effort you will gradually start to believe it too.

No matter what you have gone through in your past, you don’t have to stay there, you can get “unstuck” and move forward, and you too CAN be that Lioness you so badly want to be.

Whatever your view of being a “lioness” is, I can give you the genuine support and guidance you need to be successful in your journey.
